BLUFFING IN POKER

Bluffing in poker is betting with a hand that "you think" is not the best hand at the moment.

Bluffing is a critical skill and an important part of the game, but you don't need to do a lot of it to be a winning player. There is a big difference between bluffing a lot and being good at bluffing. It is much like any thing you do. Too much of it is never good.

Dan Harrington is a prime example of someone who rarely bluffs, yet made it to the final table of the World Series of Poker two years in a row, as well as winning the WSOP main event in 1995.

Carlos Mortensen on the other hand claims to bluff in poker more than 50% of the time.
Both ways work for them, so bluffing frequency has nothing to do with how "good" a player you are. What these two players have in common though, is that they are very good at bluffing when needed.

Dan Harrington usually plays a tight game so whenever he bets, most players will think he has the goods, so he can bluff at a few big pots and get away with it. With Carlos Mortensen, on the other hand, his opponents never know what he's holding and he uses that to his advantage.

Factors to consider before bluffing in poker are:

1) HOW MANY PLAYERS ARE STILL LEFT IN THE POT?
It is easier to bluff one player in poker than two players. The more players left in a pot, the tougher it will be for your bluff to succeed. The more players in a hand the greater the chance is that atleast one player has the goods.

2) WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR OPPONENTS?
You need to know if the players you try to bluff are tight, loose or like to take risks. Whether they are new to the game of poker or are experienced poker players.

Some players will call your bluffs because of the odds the pot is giving them, and others will call you all the way just to keep you honest.

Bluffing in poker should definitely be a part of your poker weaponry , but you should only bluff when it is profitable to do so and when you have a fairly good chance of succeeding.

Reading Mike Caros Book of Poker Tells is highly recommended for anyone wanting to understand when players are bluffing in poker and when they're not.
